US Fear Factory Kills Free Speech

Viva Palestina!By Yvonne Ridley

America is still embarrassed by the infamous McCarthy Hearings which ruined the lives of thousands of innocents during the ifties.

Anyone then, suspected of being linked to communism was arrested, interrogated and either imprisoned or forced to give names of others suspected of communist tendencies.

And so the fear and intimidation spread like a great plague across the USA. Names were blacklisted, careers and lives ruined as the authorities ruthlessly traded on peoples’ fears, paranoia and weaknesses.

With little or no evidence people were found guilty and anyone daring to question any of the actions and the wild accusations also had suspicion cast upon them.

But hey folks, that was back in the Fifties and various administrations resolved the same insane hysteria, hatred and fears would never again cast a dark shadow across the Land of the Free.

Sadly, the Salem-style witch hunts have returned, but the new villains are no longer communists. The Red Scare has been replaced by those who shout Viva Palestina!

Gaza flotilla activists were shot in head at close range

From the Guardian:
Freedom FlotillaIsrael was tonight under pressure to allow an independent inquiry into its assault on the Gaza aid flotilla after autopsy results on the bodies of those killed, obtained by the Guardian, revealed they were peppered with 9mm bullets, many fired at close range.

Nine Turkish men on board the Mavi Marmara were shot a total of 30 times and five were killed by gunshot wounds to the head, according to the vice-chairman of the Turkish council of forensic medicine, which carried out the autopsies for the Turkish ministry of justice today.

The results revealed that a 60-year-old man, Ibrahim Bilgen, was shot four times in the temple, chest, hip and back. A 19-year-old, named as Fulkan Dogan, who also has US citizenship, was shot five times from less that 45cm, in the face, in the back of the head, twice in the leg and once in the back. Two other men were shot four times, and five of the victims were shot either in the back of the head or in the back, said Yalcin Buyuk, vice-chairman of the council of forensic medicine.

The findings emerged as more survivors gave their accounts of the raids. Ismail Patel, the chairman of Leicester-based pro-Palestinian group Friends of al-Aqsa, who returned to Britain today, told how he witnessed some of the fatal shootings and claimed that Israel had operated a “shoot to kill policy”.

Freedom Flotilla: Chicagoan among the missing

From Chicago Indymedia:

“Chicagoans continue to anxiously await word of the condition of a Chicago woman aboard the aid flotilla, Fatima Mohammadi, who was traveling with hundreds of fellow human rights supporters on the Mavi Marmara, a passenger ship traveling as part of a six-ship flotilla seeking to bring vital goods to Gaza, which has been besieged by an Israeli blockade since 2006. On Saturday, Israeli commandos attacked the vessel, killing at least ten and wounding dozens of others, in international waters as the convoy steamed towards Gaza.”

Freedom Flotilla Update: Hundreds of activists imprisoned, facing deportation

From EarthTimes.org:Tel Aviv – About 480 foreign activists who were stopped by Israel on the high seas while sailing to Gaza were transferred over night to a prison in the southern Israeli city of Beersheba, Israel Radio reported Tuesday.

The activists, detained Monday, would be interrogated and then law-enforcement authorities would decide whether each one would be deported or legal action would be taken, the radio station said.

Another 48 activists had already been transported to Israel’s Ben Gurion International Airport near Tel Aviv to be expelled abroad.
Meanwhile, about 45 people, mostly Turks, remained hospitalized throughout Israel, including in Tel Aviv, the northern city of Haifa and the southern coastal city of Ashkelon, the radio said.

Two of the eight ships of the intercepted aid convoy, dubbed the Freedom Flotilla, were not among the six vessels overtaken by Israeli naval commandos in international waters early Monday and were still expected to head to Gaza this week.
The Israeli takeover turned violent, and Israeli soldiers shot dead nine activists while dozens were injured, sparking worldwide condemnation.

Seven Israeli soldiers were injured when, according to footage by the Israeli military, activists on board the Turkish ship Marmara attacked the Israeli commandos with iron rods and chairs. The Israeli military also accused the activists of opening fire on the troops.

BREAKING: Massacre of international activists by Israeli military

troops storm shipFrom Electronic Intifada:

Early this morning under the cover of darkness Israeli soldiers stormed the lead ship of the six-vessel Freedom Flotilla aid convoy in international waters and killed and injured dozens of civilians aboard. All the ships were violently seized by Israeli forces, but hours after the attack fate of the passengers aboard the other ships remained unknown.

The Mavi Marmara was carrying around 600 activists when Israeli warships flanked it from all sides as soldiers descended from helicopters onto the ship’s deck. Reports from people on board the ship backed up by live video feeds broadcast on Turkish TV show that Israeli forces used live ammunition against the civilian passengers, some of whom resisted the attack with sticks and other items.

The Freedom Flotilla was organized by a coalition of groups that sought to break the Israeli-led siege on the Gaza Strip that began in 2007. Together, the flotilla carried 700 civilian activists from around 50 countries and over 10,000 tons of aid including food, medicines, medical equipment, reconstruction materials and equipment, as well as various other necessities arbitrarily banned by Israel.
